My first 'house party' experience
I just got home and I know I should go to bed soon coz I've an early day tmr but I think this evening has been interesting enough for me to spend these few minutes writing this on my blog.
I'm feeling a little 'oozy' now, not lest because I had a tall glass of cocktail with gin and some other stuff plus a glass of wine. Well it sounds harmless, but not when you mention that the cocktail contained more gin than any of the other stuff mixed together! I just came back from a house party - something that I didn't know I'll be going for when I stepped out of my room this afternoon.
What happened was that this afternoon, I met 3 friends to have a walk along the Thames River and one girl brought another friend, who was invited to a house party. The guy who invited her, a Masters student at UCL, said that she could bring whoever she wanted. So she asked us to go. Initially, I was pretty hesitant and reluctant. On the way there, I was still reluctant to be there but since I was on my way, I thought just stay for a while and see how.
The house was located in a posh area. The shops along the streets as we neared the house were more affordable to the upper middle/upper class. I mean there were gold TAPS and things like tt on sale. Me, in my usual attire of shirt, jeans and track shoes (that was what I wore when I left my room earlier in the afternoon) felt so mega underdressed. It was worse when we got there and the guy who opened the door was in a suit and tie. I was like oh no... When I stepped in, I was like oh no even more. Everyone was dressed so well!
Inspite of all this, we stayed. Took of our coats and left our bags aside, went to get a drink and talked among ourselves. I mean if you ask me whether I spoke to many other people, well, no. But if you asked me if it was a good experience, well I'd say yes. Because I've never been to a house party, not least in a upperty area of London (or Singapore even) and though I was definitely not really part of this, it was an eye opening experience. You see things like 'class' being played out, you see social relations at work, you feel the whole concept of 'insider' and 'outsider' and you soak into the whole atmosphere and just learn more about the world around us.
I can't really describe it, not when I'm feeling a little oozy...and I know I am coz I've made so many typo errors in this post (at least I managed to recognise and correct them as I went along). And I can feel it in my head. Sorry for yet another long post, hope i wasn't too long winded. And well, just to end of, I'm really happy to be a social scientist.
